Adult American alligators held the record for the highest recorded laboratory bite of any live animal, measured at up to 13,172 N (1,343.2 kgf; 2,961 lbf). This experiment had not been replicated in any other crocodile at the time of publication of the paper, and the same laboratory was able to measure a higher bite force of 16,414 N (1,673.8 kgf; 3,690 lbf) in saltwater crocodiles; [51] [52] Despite this very high bite force, the muscles that open the jaw of the American alligator are quite weak, and the jaws can be kept closed with the hand or tape when an American alligator is caught. No significant differences are noted between the bite forces of American male and female alligators of the same size. [50] Another study found that as the size of the American alligator increases, so does the power of its bite. [53] Animals banned as pets in Tennessee include chimpanzees, gorillas, baboons, wolves, bears, lions, tigers, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, crocodiles, alligators, and venomous snakes. We`re talking about pets and, believe it or not, some people are excited about the possibility of having an alligator for a pet. By balancing sticks and branches on their heads, American alligators can lure birds in search of suitable nesting material to kill and consume. This strategy, shared by the predatory crocodile, is especially effective during the nesting season, when birds are more likely to collect appropriate nesting material.

[78] Laws relating to the ownership of the American alligator (alligator mississippiensis) vary from place to place. Some areas allow anyone to own an alligator, while others require residents to obtain a permit before acquiring one. Still others ban their property altogether. Regardless of the legal environment that governs your jurisdiction, alligators are extremely dangerous animals. And although they are important components of their natural habitats that should be revered rather than feared, large crocodiles can easily kill an adult human. Only those with the right education, knowledge and experience should take care of these gigantic predators. Adult American alligators also spend a lot of time hunting on land, up to 160 feet (50 m) from the water, and hiding land animals along trails and roads. Usually, land hunting takes place at nights with warm temperatures. [79] When hunting land prey, American alligators can also attack them from the water`s edge by catching them and dragging them into the water, the preferred method for predating larger crocodiles. [23] Males and females roar loudly, sucking air into their lungs and blowing it into intermittent, deeply tinted roars to attract mates and explain the territory.

[106] Males are known to use infrasound when mating bellows. Barking is carried out in an “oblique head, arched tail” posture. A roaring man`s infrasound waves can literally “scatter” the surface of the water directly above and on both sides of his back,[107] in what is commonly referred to as the “water dance.” [108] The large roaring “choruses” of American alligators during the breeding season are often initiated by females and immortalized by males. [109] Observers of the large roaring choirs have found that they are often felt more than heard because of the intense infrasound emitted by men. American alligators blow in B flat major (especially “B♭1”, defined as an audio frequency of 58.27 Hz), and roaring choruses can be induced by snorkel players, supersonic boomers and large airplanes. [110] Owning a pet alligator in the United States can be complicated, but some states allow it. There are states that consider alligators to be exotic animals and have banned their possession. Some states allow you to own one with appropriate licenses or permits.

There are five states that allow the possession of alligators without a single permit or license: it sticks to the idea that alligators should not be kept as pets because you need so much care and specialized facilities. There are people who are trying to improve the lives of abandoned alligators. For example, Arizona`s Phoenix Herpetological Society provides semi-wild natural habitat for 15 alligators rescued at its 2.5-acre sanctuary — as well as a number of other abandoned, abused, and seized reptiles. The facility, which has a reptile clinic and research center, aims to find a permanent home for many of their animals, often sending them to other reputable protected areas across the country. For the most part, exotic animals are illegal in Hawaii.

These include bears, big cats, wild dogs, hybrids of wild cats and wild dogs, kangaroos, wild cattle and deer, birds of prey, alligators, geckos and most lizards, hedgehogs, gerbils, hamsters and ferrets. Pets allowed include guinea pigs, chinchillas, domesticated mice and rats, parakeets and pigeons. Such regulations do not deter many collectors who covet palm-sized baby gators. A quick search for pet alligators yields dozens of websites that sell teen alligators for $150 to $15,000 (for an albino animal). There are probably 5,000 in Michigan; at least 50 in Phoenix, Arizona; and up to 52 of the prehistoric reptiles are donated to the city of Chicago each year.

Arizona`s administrative code states that it is illegal to own non-domestic dogs and cats, primates (except non-infant primates free of zoonoses), alligators, crocodiles, venomous snakes, and many others. Special permits may be granted to certain persons or groups to keep these animals if the application falls under the categories of education, public health, commercial photography, wildlife rehabilitation or wildlife management.
