Ucla Letters and Science General Education Requirements

Please note that the DARS verification serves as a Registration Document (DOR) for College of Letters & Science students. The DOR is used to certify completion of degree requirements, and is retained in accordance with the university`s retention and archiving policies. Students entering UC Santa Barbara as California Community College transfers may consider their general education requirements met due to completion of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Program (IGETC). It is a program of at least 34 semester units of articulated courses divided into six liberal arts areas. If IGETC is fully completed and certified by the Community College prior to enrollment at UCSB, it will be accepted into the completion of the general education program. Normally, unless transferred students have completed the IGETC program at the time of transfer, they must meet all the requirements of the general education program. However, students admitted in the fall of 2000 or later who have partially completed the IGETC are eligible to substitute the IGETC for the general education program requirements if they meet the following criteria: (1) they do not miss more than two courses in areas 1 to 6 of the IGETC at the time of registration; (2) The community college offers partial IGETC certification. Eligible students should contact the College of Letters and Science to determine how to complete their partial IGETC program. The College of Arts and Science encourages its students to develop functional skills in at least one language other than English before graduation. The College requires AB applicants to take at least three consecutive terms (15 credits) of coursework or the equivalent in a foreign language. The requirements of BS candidates are determined by their respective main program. Learning a foreign language contributes significantly to a broad education for today`s students, who live in a world where the overwhelming majority of people do not speak or read English and where much of the knowledge disseminated may never appear in English. Knowledge of a foreign language is important for appreciating the culture of people who use that language, and it helps students understand the structure and complexity of their own mother tongue.

Students with sufficient preparation may be able to use the foreign language to study in the discipline of their choice. University and campus requirements apply to all students, regardless of college and major. General Education (GE) courses teach basic skills at the university level and teach fundamental ideas in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences. • Concurrent courses (“XDC”) must not exceed half of the units offered to meet the requirements of the upper division of the major. Since some of the requirements that were in effect prior to this edition of the guide differ significantly from the requirements stated here, transferees are strongly advised to refer to the Bachelor`s Catalogue or Guide in effect at the time of their first registration at the university. Honors in the Major is designed for students who are interested in original research and wish to graduate with the best possible bachelor`s degree in the discipline. Honors in the Major is particularly suitable for students who are considering a thesis or who want particularly rigorous training in research, reasoning, and writing skills useful for a variety of career opportunities. Most high school degrees awarded by the College of Letters & Science require a minimum of 120 credits. The total points for the degree include the above requirements, but also includes elective courses that are not associated with a specific requirement that allow students to explore other areas of academic interest.
